Claflin Fall to Tuskegee in SIAC Tournament Opener

Albany, Ga. -- The Claflin University Panthers fell into the loser bracket of the 2018 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Baseball Tournament, dropping their opening game to the Tuskegee University Golden Tigers 10-3 Thursday's (May 3) at the Albany State University West Campus Field.
 
Claflin, now 15-31, will face Paine College in an elimination game on Friday (May 4) at 10 a.m. at Paul Eames Sports Complex in Albany.
 
This will be the fourth meeting of the season between the two East Division teams as the Panthers took the regular season series 2-1 in Orangeburg. After losing the first game of the series at 5-4, Claflin won the next two by the scores of 9-2 and 12-7.
 
In the contest against Tuskegee, the Panthers trailed 2-0 after three innings and later fell behind at 4-0 when the Golden Tigers added a run in the fifth and sixth innings.
 
Tuskegee put the game away with a four-run eighth followed by two more runs in the ninth for a 10-0 lead.
 
The Panthers had two scoring opportunities before avoiding the shutout in the ninth inning.  In the first-inning, Darrell Langston, who had two hits in the game, doubled with one out. He was left in scoring position as Grayland Fowler popped up to short and Jalen Sprull struck out looking.
 
In the seventh inning, Eric McElveen doubled to left center with one out. He later moved to third base on a ground out by Clyde Parker, but was left stranded as Malik James was out third to first.
 
In the ninth inning, McElveen, who was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, put Claflin on the scoreboard with a one-out two RBI single that brought in Craig Hopkins and Fowler.
 
Parker produced the Panthers final run of the inning with a double that scored McElveen. Parker ended the game on base as Malik James and Elliott Melton both grounded out.
 
Tuskegee finished the game with 11 hits while Claflin had seven hits and left six runners on base.
 
Tuskegee was led by Elgin Woodside at 2-for-5 with four RBIs.
 
Claflin starter Dillon Parker suffered the loss, allowing seven hits over 7.1 innings of work. He gave up five earned runs, walked seven batters and struck out four.
 
Trey Nelson picked up the win for Tuskegee in going the distance.
