Claflin Falls to Livingstone in CIAA Action

Salisbury, N.C. – Livingstone College outscored Claflin University 10-3 over the last 4:31 to capture the 79-69 win over the Panthers in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division contest Saturday (Jan. 19).
 
The loss, Claflin third in an as many games, dropped the Panthers to 6-11 overall and 5-7 in the CIAA and 3-3 in the division.
 
Trent Rolle, making his first start of the season, led Claflin with 18 points, hitting six-of-eight from the field and a perfect six-for-six at the free throw line.
 
Triston Thompson was the only other player in double-figures for the Panthers with 15 points, including 6-of-8 from the free throw line, with four assists.
 
Noah Jenkins and Brandon Davis added seven points each for Claflin, while Cornellius Reynolds was the top rebounder with seven.
 
For the game, Claflin was 20-for-25 at the charity stripe, but shot just 17.3 percent (3-of-17) from three-point range, compared to 57.1 percent (8-of-14) for the Blue Bears.
 
Both teams shot fairly well overall from the field as Claflin was 23-of-51 (45.1%) to Livingstone 24-of-55 (43.6%).
 
Roger Ray led the Blue Bears with a game-high 33 points that included six-pointers.
 
Lydell Elmore added a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds for Livingstone, now 10-6 overall and 1-0 in the division.
 
After trailing 35-33 at the half, Claflin gained the lead twice in the early goings of the second period, the last at 41-38 with 17:48 left.
 
Livingston took the lead for good at 45-43 when Cameryn Carpenter scored with 15:56 to go.
 
The Panthers trailed by nine points with 7:42 left in the game at 67-58, and kept chipping away over the next three-plus minutes when a pair of three throws by Thompson pulled Claflin within 69-66 at the 4:25 mark.
 
The three-point deficit would be the closes for the Panthers as the Blue Bears finished the game on a 10-3 run.
 
In the opening period, Claflin scored first game's first basket, a three-pointer from Thompson, but Livingstone tied the contest at 3-3 when Ray connected on a three-point basket with 18:21 showing on the clock.
 
Rolle hit a jumper 33 seconds later for Claflin, giving the Panthers a 5-3 lead.  Claflin would hold the three-point advantage over the next six minutes.
 
Livingstone pulled even on Martel Handley's three-pointer basket that knotted the game at 17-17 with 11:00 to go. Davis quickly broke the tie with a slam dunk, giving the Panthers 19-17 lead at the 10:25 mark.
 
Over the next 9:33 minutes, the contest would be tied three times, the last at 33-33 when Reynolds hit a free throw for Claflin at 1:02 mark before halftime.
 
Rogers, who had 19 points in the first half for Livingstone, was successful on two free-throws as the Blue Bears led 35-33 at the intermission.
 
The Panthers will remain on the road, traveling to Fayetteville State University on Monday (Jan. 21) for another CIAA divisional matchup. The contest gets underway at 7:30 p.m.
