Claflin Women Fall to Winston-Salem State in CIAA Road Game

Box Score Winston-Salem, N.C. — After a 15-day hiatus from competition for the holiday, the Claflin University women's basketball team opened the 2019 calendar year with a 81-56 loss to Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) road contest.
 
The loss drops the Lady Panthers to 7-8 overall and 5-4 in the CIAA. The Rams improve to 6-6 and 2-1 in the CIAA.
 
Freshman Dashia Jackson recorded her first ever double-double, 12 points-11 rebounds, in leading Claflin. 
 
The Lady Panthers had three players to finish in double-figures as Shakarri Mack and Deja Dickens dropped in 10 points apiece.
 
Dionna Long came off the bench to contribute nine points in the loss while Ashley Fields added seven points and eight rebounds.
 
Winston-Salem State was led by Briona Pate who recorded a double-double, 18 points-15 rebounds.  Amaya Tucker scored 15 and Nyona Shields dropped in 12 to round out the double-digit scorers for the Rams.
 
The second quarter proved to be the turning point of the game for Claflin as its offense was non-existent.  After finishing the first quarter knotted at 14-all with the Rams, the Lady Panthers managed just two points in the second while Winston-Salem State dropped in 19 to take a 33-16 lead into the half.
 
Despite the large half-time deficit, the Lady Panthers kept fighting. The teams played fairly even over the final two quarters.  Winston-Salem State outscoring Claflin by only eight (48-40), five in the third (26-21) and three in the fourth (22-19), over the final two stanzas.
 
For the game, the Lady Panthers connected on just 20-of-68 from the field for 29.4 percent.  Normally a solid free-throw shooting team (61%), Claflin managed to hit just 10-of-26 for 38.5 percent.  The Lady Panthers dropped in 6-of-22 three-pointers (27.3%).
 
Winston-Salem State was solid on all ends during the game.  The Rams shot 50.8 (30-of-59) percent from the field, 73.9 from the charity stripe (17-of-23) and 4-of-11 from three-point range for 36.4 percent.
 
Claflin will host Shaw University in a 5:30 p.m. CIAA contest on Monday (Jan. 7) for Community Night and Albany State on Jan. 14 in its final non-conference game of the season.  The Lady Panthers will then hit the road for four straight road games beginning January 19 at Livingstone College.  Claflin will then travel to Fayetteville State (Jan. 21), Johnson C. Smith (Jan. 28) and Benedict College (Jan. 31).
