Jackson, Fields Lead Claflin Past Shaw

Orangeburg, S.C. – Dashia Jackson and Ashley Fields combined for 49 points as Claflin University upended Shaw University for the second time this season, 77-67, in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) women's basketball contest on Monday (Jan. 6) in Tullis Arena.
 
With the win, Claflin improved to 8-8 overall and 6-4 in the CIAA, but more importantly, 3-2 in the Southern Division.
 
Jackson led all scorers with a career-high of 26 points, 18 coming in the second-half. She was 9-of-18 from the field, including four three-pointers along with six rebounds. Jackson previous career-high of 23 points which came against Chowan University.
 
Fields, who posted her fourth double-double of the season, finished the game with 23 points and 11 rebounds for the Lady Panthers. She also added five assists and six steals.
 
Shakarri Mack and Deja Dickens had seven points apiece for Claflin.  Dickens also had three assists and three steals.
 
Shaw, now 3-9 and 0-4 in the CIAA, was led by Macy Keen with a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds. KlinTisha Martin had 13 for the Lady Bears with five rebounds.
 
In the first quarter, Shaw scored the first 12 points to take a quick 12-0 lead with 7:14 on the game clock.
 
The Lady Panthers returned the favor by scoring the next 12 points, tying the contest at 12-12 with 3:55 left in the quarter.
 
Following a 14-14 tie 42 seconds later, Claflin scored 11 of the quarter last 18 to lead 25-21 heading into the second quarter.
 
Fields played a significant role for the Lady Panthers in the first quarter, scoring 12 points including a perfect 4-for-4 from the field and 4-of-5 at the free throw line.
 
In the second quarter, the two teams played nearly even with Claflin outscoring Shaw by one, 12-11, for a 37-32 advantage at intermission.
 
The Lady Panthers never trailed in the quarter and posted its biggest lead of the first half, 10 points, at 33-23 with 7:09 showing on the clock.
 
In the third quarter, the Lady Panthers extended its five-point (37-32) halftime lead to 12 points (48-36) off a Jackson three-pointer with 6:02 on the clock.
 
Claflin maintained a double-digit lead for nearly five minutes until Keyonte Cherry hit a three-point basket for Shaw, cutting the Lady Panthers lead to 53-45 at the 1:28 mark.
 
Claflin pushed its lead back to double-digits by end of the quarter with a 9-5 run to lead 62-50.
 
The fourth quarter saw Shaw outscore Claflin at 17-15, but the Lady Bears could get no closer than eight points on two separate occasions, the last at 69-61 with 4:23 left.
 
The Lady Panthers will next a break from CIAA play on Monday (Jan. 14), hosting Albany State University of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference at 5:30 p.m.
