Claflin Falls to Shaw in Mid-Week Conference Match

Raleigh, N.C. – The Lady Bears of Shaw University defeated the Claflin University Lady Panthers 3-0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-14) in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division volleyball match on Wednesday at Historic C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.
 
The loss dropped Claflin to 2-5 overall and 1-1 against CIAA competition.
 
The straight set victory by Shaw, improved the Lady Bears season worksheet to a 3-0 in the CIAA and 3-7 overall.
 
After quickly dropping the first two sets of the match, Claflin came out aggressive in set three, jumping out to a 5-1 lead forcing Shaw into its first timeout of the set.
 
Out to the timeout, the Lady Bears rattled off the next five-of-six points to the game at 6-all.  The Lady Panthers regained the lead off a service error by the Lady Bears but it was short-lived as Shaw scored the next two points to take an 8-7 lead forcing Claflin into its first timeout of the set.
 
Shaw's offense remained solid out of the timeout, scoring 6-of-7 points for the 14-8 lead.
 
The Lady Bears closed the game on a 11-6 run.
 
In the loss, the Lady Panthers produced only 12 kills to 45 for the Lady Bears. Sadaiya Edouard, Briana Reed and Erin Preston had three kills each for Claflin.
 
Shaw picked up 10 more digs than Claflin (34-24) with Trinity Fierce recording seven for the Lady Panthers.
 
Shaw was led by Jailynn Butler with 11 kills, with three service aces and seven digs. Karla Sosa and Amari Fletcher had 10 kills apiece.
 
The Lady Panthers will return to action on Friday (Oct. 4), playing host to Winston-Salem State University in another divisional matchup at 6 p.m. inside Tullis Arena.
