Fayetteville State Defeats Claflin in Final Home Volleyball Match of the Season

Orangeburg, S.C. – The Claflin University volleyball team fell to Fayetteville State University 3-0 (25-19, 25-10, 25-23) in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division match on Tuesday (Nov. 13) at the Jonas T. Kennedy Health and Wellness Center (Tullis Arena).
 
The loss dropped Claflin to 6-17 overall and 5-11 in the CIAA with one match remaining. The Lady Panthers will close out the regular season on Friday (Nov. 15) at Saint Augustine's University in Raleigh, N.C.
 
Fayetteville State improved to 15-6 overall and 15-1 in conference play with the road win.
 
In the match, Fayetteville State racked up 48 kills, while Claflin produced 28 as a team. Jala Roberts topped the Lady Panthers with 10 kills and three serve aces.
 
Diamond Holmes also had 10 kills in the match in leading Fayetteville State.
 
On the defensive end, Fayetteville State edged Claflin by a slim 62-60 margin in the digs department.
 
The Lady Panthers had two players to post double-digit dig in the outing, as Trinity Fierce had a team-high 19 digs and Angel Johnson at 12.
 
Fayetteville State also had two players to hit double-figures mark in digs, Da'Nesha Miller and Meagan Greene with 14 and 12, respectively.
 
Erin Preston of Claflin led all players in assists with 22.
 
In the first set, Fayetteville State led until the Lady Panthers pulled even at 18-18. The Broncos wrapped up the set win by scoring seven of the last eight points of the set for the 25-19 win.
 
The second set was tied five times in the early going, the last at 6-6, before Fayetteville State went on a 10-2 run to lead 16-8. From that point, Fayetteville State finished by outscoring Claflin 9-2 the rest of the way for a 25-10 victory.
 
The third set was close throughout with five ties and six lead changes. With the contest tied at 18-18, Fayetteville State outscored the home team 7-5 down the stretch in posting the 25-23 set win. Both teams collected 12 kills each in the set.
