Claflin Volleyball Falls to Johnson C. Smith in Home Conference Match

Orangeburg, S.C. – Johnson C. Smith University completed the regular-season sweep of Claflin University, defeating the Lady Panthers 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-23) in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Southern Division volleyball match on Saturday at the Tullis Arena.
 
The loss dropped Claflin to 6-15 on the season and 5-9 in conference play with three matches remaining. The Lady Panthers will travel to Winston-Salem State University on Wednesday (Nov. 6). Claflin will then close out the regular season the following week, hosting Fayetteville State University on (Nov. 12) before traveling to Saint Augustine's University on (Nov. 15).
 
Johnson C. Smith improved to 8-9 overall and evened its CIAA record at 7-7.
 
For the match, the Golden Bulls posted 20 more kills than Claflin (49-29) but the Lady Panthers out-blocked Johnson C. Smith, 7-5.
 
Freshman Briana Reed led Claflin with nine kills along with two block-assists and two digs.  Junior Jala Roberts put down five kills with five digs in the match.
 
The Lady Panthers offense was run by Vianca Colón Gonzalez and Erin Preston who put up 13 and 11 set assists, respectively.  Jada Jones picked up 12 digs to lead Claflin defensively.
 
Taylor Smith led three Johnson C. Smith players with double-digit kills with 16.  Brianne Davis put down 13 and Gabrielle Wells added 12 in the contest.  Cydney Calhoun had a match-high 41 set assists and Joi Haywood had 15 digs.
