Claflin Lady Panthers Suffer Road Loss at Virginia Union

Richmond, Va. – Virginia Union University defeated Claflin University 86-51 in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) women's basketball game on Monday, Nov. 25.
 
The loss dropped Claflin to 0-6 on the season and 0-2 in the CIAA, while Virginia Union improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in league play.
 
Dionna Long led the Lady Panthers with eight points followed by Breanna Price, Dashia Jackson and Ty'sha Hamon-Dubose at seven points each.
 
Joice Beda Thomas was the top rebounder for Claflin with 10 boards.
 
Virginia Union Shareka McNeill was the game's top scorer with 32 points followed by her twin sister, Shameka McNeill at 21 points.
 
Claflin nearly played Virginia Union toe-to-toe over the opening 10 minutes. The quarter saw the Lady Panthers lead for a little over seven minutes, holding a seven-point lead twice. Claflin shot 50 percent (8-of-16) from the field in the quarter including one three-pointer. The Lady Panthers also dominated the boards in the opening stanza by a 12-8 margin with nine rebounds on the defensive end.
 
With Claflin leading 19-17, Shareka McNeill hit a three-pointer with four seconds remaining in the quarter to put the home team ahead for good at 20-19.
 
The second quarter was scoring drought for Claflin as the Lady Panthers scored just five points, a three-pointer from Jackson and two free-throws.
 
On the other side, Virginia Union came out hot, scoring the first 15 points of the quarter to take a commanding 35-19 lead with 2:37 remaining in the half.
 
Virginia Union led 38-24 at intermission.
 
Virginia Union outscored in the second half, Claflin 48-37 en route to the victory.
 
The Lady Panthers will return home on Dec. 2 to face Winston-Salem State University in another CIAA contest.  Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in Tullis Arena on the Claflin campus.
