Claflin Battle Late, Falls Short in Season Opener

West Chester, Pa. – The Claflin University men's basketball team pull within five points late in the second half but could not get any closer as the Panthers fell to West Chester, 69-62, in their 2019-20 season opener.  The contest was a part of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA)/Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Challenge.
 
Claflin will face Kutztown, who defeated CIAA Foe Lincoln (PA) 79-73, in its opening game of the tournament.  Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm on Saturday (Nov. 9) in Hollinger Field House on the West Chester campus.
 
Letrell West scored 14 points, including nine from behind the arc, to lead Claflin. Cornellius Reynolds finished the game with a double-double, 10 points and 10 rebounds (seven on the defensive end) while Nkem Ojeh was one-point shy of a double-figures finishing the game with nine points.
 
West Chester had three players to score in double-figures led by Robbie Heath with a game-high 20 points.  Malik Jackson scored 14 and Marcus Littles added 12 points in the game.  Nick Alikakos was the leading rebounder in the game with 12.
 
The Panthers were down by as many as 16, 41-25, with 16:03 remaining in the game but continued to battle.  Claflin chipped away at the lead over the next six-plus minutes to cut the deficit to 46-41 with 9:40 remaining in the contest.
 
West Chester managed to push its lead back to 11, 59-48 with just over four minutes but the Panthers pulled within five once again, 65-66, with :38 remaining before falling by the seven-point margin.
 
Claflin scored the first points of the game before West Chester went on a 7-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 7-2 advantage.  The Panthers scored the next five points to tie the game at 7-all.  The teams exchanged lead with West Chester taking the lead for good, 14-13, at the 10:44 mark of the first half.
 
The Golden Rams closed the first half on a 15-8 run for the 29-21 half-time lead.
