Lady Panthers Upend Benedict, 68-63

Orangeburg, S.C. – Dashia Jackson tied a career-high of five three-pointers in scoring 19 points and Ashley Fields added 17 points as the Claflin University Lady Panthers upended rival Benedict College 68-63 on Thursday (Feb. 21) at the Tullis Arena.
 
With the win, Claflin finished the regular season at 14-13 overall, while Benedict dropped to 20-6.
Jackson, who was 5-of-8 from long range, also connected on five three-pointers against Anderson University and Fayetteville State University during the regular season. She also added seven assists and three steals in the win.
 
Fields, who pushed her career-point total to 918 points, also added seven rebounds and four steals for the Lady Panthers, while Carmen Robinson chipped in 14 points on 6-of-11 from the floor.
 
Shakarri Mack wrapped up the double-digit scoring for Claflin, posting a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds.
 
Benedict was led by Ay'Anna Bey with a double-double of 22 points and 20 rebounds followed by Ayanna Armstead at 13 points.

The season sweep did not come easy for Claflin as the Lady Panthers had to hold off a stubborn Benedict team in the fourth quarter. Benedict outscored Claflin 20-10 over the last six-plus minutes to pull within three, 64-61, in the final 46 seconds.
 
The Lady Panthers sealed the home victory in the closing seconds as Fields hit one-of-two free throws followed by a steal.
 
Both teams played on even terms in the third scoring13 points apiece.
 
In the first quarter, Benedict held a silm 11-10 lead at the 4:08 mark of the quarter before the Lady Panthers went on a 7-1 run to take a 17-12 lead with 2:16 on the clock. Claflin would protect its lead the rest of the quarter to lead 17-16 after one.
 
The second quarter started out slow offensively for both teams as they combined for just nine points in the first six minutes, seven by Claflin. The Lady Panthers led by eight, 24-16, with 4:39 left in the quarter.
 
The Lady Tigers didn't reached the scoring column until the 4:20 mark when Bey scored on an inside basket as Benedict trailed 24-18.
 
Things heated up in the final four minutes of the quarter, especially for Claflin, as the Lady Panthers scored 11 of the final 17 points to lead 35-24 at halftime. Jackson provided Claflin the double-digit lead, connecting on a three-pointer with two seconds before intermission. She had 11 points in the first half.
 
The Lady Panthers will return to action next week, participating in their first-ever Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Tournament in Charlotte, N.C. The tournament early round games will be played at the Bojanles' Coliseum with the semi-finals and finals scheduled for the Spectrum Center.
