Florida Southern Defeat Claflin to Complete Weekend Baseball Series Sweep

Orangeburg, S.C. – Florida Southern College scored five times in the seventh-inning as the Mocs completed the three-game sweep of Claflin University on Sunday (Mar. 10), defeating the Panthers 10-3 at Historic Mirmow Field.

Claflin dropped to 12-7 on the season and finished the 17-game home stand at 10-7. The Panthers will be off until this weekend when they travel to Tuskegee University of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) for three games. The first game is slated for Saturday (Mar. 16) followed by a Sunday (Mar. 17) doubleheader.

After Claflin tied the contest at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth-inning off a Clyde Parker run-scoring single and Eric McElveen scoring on a pass ball, Florida Southern erupted for five runs in the top of the seventh-inning. The Mocs pounded out four hits in the inning, the biggest blow, a base clearing double by Alex Goebel.

Goebel finished the game with 4 RBIs to lead Florida Southern, while Zack Scott added two hits and 3RBIs.

The Mocs tacked on two more runs in the ninth-inning for the final margin of victory.

The Panthers, which collected seven hits in the game, had only two in the final three innings.

Gerardic Dobbs led Claflin with two hits and Jalen Sprull added a double in the contest.

The Claflin offense generated only six runs and 18 hits during the weekend series compared to 20 runs and 36 hits for Florida Southern.

For the third consecutive game, the Panthers starter pitched effectively for the first six innings. Cleveland Westbrook, who suffered his first loss in four decisions this season, allowed Florida Southern just three runs on seven hits over the span.

During the series, the Claflin starters of Dillon Parker, Eric Dubose and Westbrook surrendered just five runs in a combined 18 innings of work (first six innings of each game), before the Mocs bats got hot.

The seventh-inning was the difference in each game as Florida Southern scored nine runs total (1-game one, 3-game two, 5-game three), in that frame.

Ryan Lanford was the winning pitcher for Florida Southern in game three.
