Claflin Softball Cruise Past Bluefield State

Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Claflin University pitchers combined for 19 strikeouts and two hits as the Lady Panthers cruised past Bluefield State, 8-0 and 11-1, in a neutral site non-conference double header at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The win, the fifth straight for Claflin, push the Lady Panthers overall record to 13-12.  Bluefield State drops to 4-3 on the season.

Freshman pitcher Bre'Zhay Chambers picked up the 8-0 win in game one, going all six innings, allowing just two hits with 10 strikeouts, no walks and a hit-by-pitch against 20 batters faced.

Another freshman pitcher, Shaniya Thomas, was the winning pitcher of game two.  She went four-of-five innings, facing 18 batters while allowing just two walks, a hit by pitch and one run with eight strikeouts.

Senior Yamaya Rich pitched the final inning in game two, facing just three batters with one strikeout.

Claflin offense was equally as damaging as they knocked out combined 22 hits, 12 in game one-10 in game two, including an in-the-park homerun by senior LaKaylin Lee in game one. Lee finished the double header, 2-for-5, with three runs.

Freshman Chaston Huntly was also solid for the Lady Panthers finishing the double header with three hits, including the game two winner, with three runs and four RBIs.

Hannah Fisher, who scored Bluefield State's only run of the day, led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk and advanced to second on a pass ball to put her in scoring position.  Fisher's run came off a throwing error by Thomas with two outs. Thomas struck out the final batter of the inning.

Claflin will remain on the road as they travel to Elizabeth City, N.C. Friday-Sunday, Mar. 15-17, to participate in its first-ever CIAA Roundup,.  The Lady Panthers will meet the six teams from the Northern Division of the conference over the three-day period.
