Claflin Softball Goes 2-0 on Day One of the 2019 CIAA Round-up

Elizabeth City, N.C. –The Claflin University softball team went 2-0 on day one of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round-up hosted by Elizabeth City State University.  This the first-ever Round-up of the Lady Panthers.  Claflin joined the CIAA last July.
 
The round-up, which runs through Sunday, Mar. 17, is being held at the South Park Athletic Complex located at 110 Capital Trace, Elizabeth City, N.C. 27909.
 
Claflin, who is playing the northern division opponents of the conference over the weekend, will face Virginia Union University and Lincoln University (PA) on day two, Saturday (Mar. 16), at 12:15 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., respectively.  The Lady Panthers will close out the Round-up on Sunday (Mar. 17) versus Chowan University at 10 a.m. and host Elizabeth City State University at 12:15 p.m.
 
With the wins, Claflin improves to 15-12 overall and 4-0 in the CIAA.
 
In their opening game, the Lady Panthers cruised past Bowie State University, 14-0.  Claflin collected 14 hits, including three homeruns (Jada Ames, Kayla Cato, and Mercedes Howze).
 
Ames paced the Lady Panthers in game one, going 2-for-2 with three runs and three RBIs.  Ashley Thomas also had a good game one at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two runs.
 
LaKaylin Lee, who went three innings, was the game one winner.  Lee did not allow any hits and allowed just two walks with one strikeout.
 
Game two was a lot more competitive for Claflin.  The Lady Panthers pulled out a hard fought 5-2 win over Virginia State University.
 
Claflin jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two complete innings.  Virginia State cut the deficit to two in the top of the fourth, but the Lady Panthers got one of the runs back in their half of the fourth for the three-run lead.
 
Claflin defense remained solid over the final three innings, holding the Trojans scoreless to close out the game.
 
Kadasia Damon had one run with one hit and a RBI to lead Claflin in game two. 
 
Bre'Zhay Chambers went 3 2/3 innings to pick up the win.  Shaniya Thomas came in on relief, going 3 1/3 innings to pick up her fourth save of the season.
