Claflin, Miles Spilt Double Header

Orangeburg, S.C. – The Claflin University Panthers and Miles College Golden Bears split a pair of baseball games on Saturday (Mar. 2) at Historic Mirmow Field.

Claflin took the second game of the double-header 8-7, while Miles won the opener at 12-5.
 
The Panthers, now 10-4 on the season, will try to capture the series on Sunday (Mar. 3) at 12-noon.
 
Miles is now 5-6 for the season.
 
In the Claflin win, the Panthers wiped out a 3-1 lead by the Golden Bears with a four-run second-inning.
 
The lead did not last long for Claflin as Miles scored three runs in the third for a 6-5 advantage.
 
The Panthers stormed back in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead at 7-5 on a run-scoring single off the bat of Gerardric Dobbs followed by a balk from Miles pitcher Will Canty that allowed Lyndell Morley to come home.
 
Claflin added what proved to be the winning run in the fifth-inning when Eric McElveen scored from third off a Grayland Fowler grounder to first to take the 8-6 lead.
 
Miles pulled within a run at 8-7 in the sixth-inning with a run before Cleveland Westbrook relieved Panther starter Eric Dubose with one out. Westbrook retired five of the last six batters he faced in the final 1.2 innings for the save.
 
Dubose picked up his first win of the season for Claflin.
 
Canty took the loss for the Golden Bears.
 
Morley led the Panthers at the plate with three hits and two RBIs followed by Dobbs at two hits and an RBI.
 
Jalen Sprull and Craig Hopkins contributed a hit and a RBIs apiece for the Panthers, while Clyde Parker and McElveen added two hits each.
 
Peyton Logan had a two-run homer to lead Miles followed by Dalton Roberts with two hits and 2 RBIs.
 
In the opener, the Golden Bears scored six runs over the first three innings and six more over the last four in ending the Panthers five-game winning streak.
 
Miles led 6-0 before Claflin scored its first run of the game in the third inning.
 
After Miles added two more runs in the fourth to lead 8-1, Claflin pushed across four runs in its half of the fifth to trail 8-5. In that inning, Dobbs, Hopkins and Clyde Parker all had one-out RBI single for the Panthers.  That would be all the scoring for Claflin, which banged 13 hits in the game to 15 for Miles.
 
Dobbs was the top hitter for the Panthers collecting three hits and two RBIs, followed by Nicholas Johnson and Parker with a hit and an RBI each.
 
Hopkins added three hits for Claflin, while Morley had two.
 
Miles was led at the plate by Roberts with three hits, including a home runs and three RBIs. Jacob Bisharat had two hits and 3 RBIs for the Golden Bears
 
Jacob Schuster was the winning pitcher for Miles, while Dillon Parker, now 2-1, suffered the loss for the Panthers.
