Orangeburg, SC -- Claflin University pitchers recorded two shutouts as the Lady Panthers softball team remained unbeaten in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play, sweeping the Broncos of Fayetteville State University, 8-0 and 3-0, Saturday (March 23) at Adden Street Field in Orangeburg.
The sweep gives Claflin its 22nd win of the season and 10th win in the conference
Fayetteville State drops to 3-17 and 3-5 in the CIAA.
Freshman pitcher Bre'Zhay Chambers set the tone for the day, finishing game with a one hit shut-out -- her fourth of the season. Chambers recorded eight strikeouts with just one walk against 19 batters faced.
The Broncos one hit came in the final inning of the 5-inning run rule game.
The Lady Panthers offense knocked out 10 hits over five innings. Ashley Thomas and Kaela Robinson led Claflin with two hits each. The Lady Panthers had eight different runners to cross the plate in the win.
The Broncos defense was more solid in game two, holding Claflin to just three hits and three runs.
Kayla Cato hit a home run in the bottom of the six for one of the three runs by Claflin in game two.
LaKaylin Lee, and Chelise Morman scored the other two runs in the game.
Shaniya Thomas was solid on the mound for Claflin, holding the Broncos to just one hit with 10 strikeouts and one walk.
The Lady Panthers will step out of conference, Wednesday, March 26, when they host Benedict College in a double header at Adden Street Field in Orangeburg
