Claflin Softball Takes Two from Benedict

Orangeburg, S.C. – Chaston Huntly hit an RBI sacrifice fly  in the bottom of the seventh of game two to give Claflin University the double header sweep over Benedict College Tuesday, Mar. 26 at Adden Street Field in Orangeburg.  The Lady Panthers defeated the Lady Tigers 6-0 and 6-5.
 
With the wins, Claflin improves to 24-13 overall while Benedict drops to 11-15 on the season.
 
Huntly finished the day with two hits, two runs and a RBI.
 
Kayla Cato also had a solid day on the diamond, finishing with two hits, including a home run, two runs, including the game winning run in game two, and two RBIs.
 
LaKaylin Lee finished with two hits, including a double, and two runs while Jada Ames knocked out two hits, including a homerun in game one, with three RBIs.
 
Benedict was led in game one by Starkeira Daniel with two hits.  Teandreanna Conyers scored one run with two hits and Taylor Roberts knocked out one hit with a run and a RBI in game two for the Lady Tigers.
 
Benedict scored the first two runs in the top of the first in game two to take the early advantage.  Claflin countered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the first.  LaKaylin Lee led off the inning with a walk.  And with one out and one on, Cato hit a two-run homer to tie the game after one.
 
After neither team scored in the second inning, Claflin defense held strong in the top of the third before the Lady Panthers offense erupted for three runs in the third.
 
Kadasia Damon led off the third inning with a single up the middle.  With one out in the inning, Chaston Huntly doubled moving Damon to third base.  With two out and two on, Ames walked and Damon advanced home for the Lady Panthers third run of the game.  Huntly advanced to third. 
 
On the next play, the throw down to second on Ames' steal allowed Huntly to steal home for the Lady Panthers fourth run of the contest.  A RBI single by Mercedes Howze scored Ames to put Claflin up 5-2 after three complete.
 
Benedict battled back, scoring one in the fifth and two in the sixth to tie the game at 5-all heading into the final inning.  Claflin defense was solid in the top of the seventh inning.
 
Cato led off the bottom of the seventh with a four pitch walk which set the stage for Huntly's RBI sacrifice fly to win the game.
 
Bre'Zhay Chambers went all seventh innings in picking up her 11th win of the season.
 
Claflin controlled game one of the double header offensively while holding Benedict in check defensively.
 The Lady Panthers scored two runs in the first, three in the fifth and one in the sixth en route to the 6-0 win over Benedict in game one. Claflin held the Lady Tigers to just four hits in the opening game.
 
Shaniya Thomas pitched a complete game to pick up her eighth win of the season.
 
The Lady Panthers will have six days off from competition before returning to the diamond next Tuesday, Apr. 2 when they host St. Augustine's University in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) double header.
