Claflin Softball Defeats Johnson C. Smith to Start CIAA Era

Orangeburg, S.C. – The Claflin University softball team opened its Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) era with a double header sweep of Johnson C. Smith University, defeating the Golden Bulls, 8-0 and 8-0, Monday (Mar. 4) at Adden Street Field in Orangeburg.
 
Claflin, winners of three straight, improves to 11-12 overall and 2-0 in the CIAA.  Johnson C. Smith drops to 0-4 on the season and 0-2 in the CIAA.
 
Claflin dominated both games of the double header, holding Johnson C. Smith to just three hits across the double header while knocking out 17.
 
In game one, the Lady Panthers scored in four-of-five innings. After neither team crossed the plate in the opening inning, Claflin put up three runs in each of the first and third innings and one in each of the second and fifth in capturing game one 8-0.
 
Kayla Cato led the way in the hit department in game one with two, including a triple.  Cato finished the first game with one run and two RBIs.
 
LaKaylin Lee finished the game with two runs, one hit, a home run, and two RBI's.  Marion Goins also had two runs for the Lady Panthers in the win.
 
Randasia Daniels had the lone hit in game one for Johnson C. Smith.
 
Claflin dominated game two from the opening inning.  After holding the Golden Bulls scoreless in their half of the first, the Lady Panthers put up four runs in the bottom of the first.
 
After neither team scored in the second, Claflin put up three runs in the third and one in the fourth to take an eight run lead. 
 
The Golden Bulls placed one on the base pads in the top of the fifth but could not get cross the plate, thus falling by eight in five innings.
 
Cato was again led the Lady Panthers offensively going 3-for-3 including a double and homerun along with one run and three RBIs.
 
Daniels and Kaitlin Santos each had a hit for Johnson C. Smith in the contest.
 
Bre'Zhay Chambers and Shaniya Thomas were the winners in game one and two, respectively.
 
Claflin will have eight days off from competition before returning to the diamond next Wednesday, Mar. 13 when they travel to Myrtle Beach, S.C. to face Bluefield State in a neutral site double header. The Lady Panthers will then travel to Elizabeth City, NC the weekend of March 15-17 to participate in the CIAA Roundup.
