Claflin Volleyball Fall to Paine in 2019 Season Opener

Augusta, Ga. – The Claflin University volleyball team dropped its season opener to Paine, Saturday, Sept. 14, falling in the non-conference contest 3-1 (25-17, 14-25, 25-22, 25-21), at HEAL Complex on the campus of Paine College in Augusta, Ga.  The loss drops Claflin to 0-1 on the season while Paine improves to 3-0 on the season.
 
Junior outside hitter Jala Roberts paced Claflin with 12 kills and two blocks.  Freshman Briana Reed also finished with double-digit kills putting down 11 while freshman Taylor Drayton added eight kills in the match. Sophomore Sadaiya Edouard served up four aces
 
Defensively, the Lady Panthers were led by sophomore Trinity Fierce with 11 digs and freshman Jada Jones, who picked up eight digs in the loss.
 
Léah Wellington and Vianca Cólon-Gonzales, who shared the setting duties, finished with 17 and 14 assists, respectively.
 
Paine was led in the contest by Shavonne Boggs with 12 kills.  Jada Wilks and Kennedy Curtis added 10 and nine kills, respectively.  Wilks also put down four blocks for the Lady Lions, who finished the game with six total blocks.
 
Claflin will have one week off before returning to the court.  The Lady Panthers will host Frostburg State University and Paine in a Tri-Match, next Saturday, Sept. 21.  Claflin will face Frostburg State at 11 a.m. and Paine at 3 p.m. in the Tri-Match.  Frostburg and Paine will play the middle game at 1 p.m.
 
All Claflin University home volleyball games are played at Tullis Arena inside the Jonas T. Kennedy Health and Wellness Complex on the Claflin campus.
