Florence, S.C. -- The Claflin University volleyball team dropped a non-conference match Friday, Sept. 28, falling to Francis Marion, 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-20), at the Smith Center in Florence. With the lost, the Lady Panthers falls to 1-4 on the season while the Patriots improve to 8-6.
Claflin will host St. Augustine's University Saturday (Sept. 28) in its 2019 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) opener. First serve is set for 2 p.m. at Tullis Arena.
Freshman Taylor Drayton paced Claflin with nine kills. Drayton also had seven digs in the contest. Junior Jala Roberts added seven kills while Shiniyia Shonia had three block assists for the Lady Panthers.
Vianca Colón Gonzalez and Léah Wellington put up eight assists each and Wellington and Trinity Fierce picked up 11 and 10 digs, respectively in the loss.
Francis Marion was led by Lily Walton with 15 kills and three block assists. Adison Minor had seven kills and 10 digs while Madeline Winning picked up a game-high 25 assists.
After the St. Augustine's match, the Lady Panthers will hit the road for a CIAA contest at Shaw University (Oct. 2), before returning home October 4 to host Winston-Salem State.
