ORANGEBURG, SC - The Claflin Panthers (11-8, 5-4 CIAA) gave it their all, but their efforts fell short in a dramatic 67-66 loss to the Fayetteville State Broncos (13-6, 6-3 CIAA), Saturday afternoon. After senior guard
Jailen Williams hit a lay-up with just four seconds to play, the Panthers allowed a Bronco three-pointer at the buzzer to take the dramatic loss.
The loss came despite a great overall game for the Panthers. The team held the lead through most of the game. As a team, the Panthers played a great game, shooting 50.0% (28-of-56) from the floor while holding Fayetteville State to shooting just 40.4% (21-of-52). Claflin was led by senior forward
Zion Obanla who scored a game-high 20 points for the Panthers. Junior center
David Onyekonwu led the Panthers' rebounding efforts with seven in the game.
With the loss, the Panthers fall to 11-8 overall and 5-4 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. The team also falls to 2-1 in CIAA Southern Division play.
The Panthers will return to action, Wednesday, when the team heads to nearby Columbia, South Carolina to take on the rival Benedict Tigers.
