Claflin University Sports Medicine Athletic Trainer is a healthcare professional who work under the direction of physicians. These individuals provide preventive services, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions of student-athletes at Claflin University. Athletic Trainers attend accredited programs that teach them how to properly provide first aid and emergency care, assessments, care and prevention of injuries and illnesses, the use of therapeutic modalities, nutritional habits, and creating rehabilitation sessions.
The Athletic Training Scope of Practice is defined within two professional publications: National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) and the Board of Certification, Inc. (BOC). The publications describe the role of an athletic trainer and the competencies they must complete before attaining the Certified Athletic Trainer title. After injury/illness assessment Athletic Trainers make clinical decisions of whether to refer patients to physicians for further evaluation and care.
