Claflin University men’s basketball assistant coach Edward Newton will bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the program. He joined the staff alongside head coach Brion Dunlap in the spring of 2022.
Newton will bring an extensive background of coaching to the Panthers’ sidelines. He has had several assistant coaching stops and he has seen success at each one. He came to Claflin University after serving as an assistant alongside Dunlap at Harris-Stowe University. Prior to his successful run at Harris-Stowe, Newton was an assistant coach at former Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) foe Miles College. During his tenure at Miles, Newton helped the Bears to win their first ever SIAC West Division Regular Season Championship as well as the school’s first ever SIAC Tournament Championship. He also spent time as an assistant coach at Dillard University. During his career, Newton has made stops at LeMoyne-Owen College and McPherson College.
Newton has been a head coach during his career as well. He served as the head coach at Rust College.
Newton is a graduate of Rust College where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communication.
