Claflin Falls to Spring Hill in Three-Game Series

Mobile, Ala.—The Claflin University baseball team dropped all three games of the non-conference series with Spring Hill College last Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 14-15, in Mobile, Ala.  The Panthers fell in Saturday's doubleheader, 3-9 and 1-11 and in Sunday's single game 9-10 in 11 innings.  With the series loss, Claflin falls to 1-9 on the season.

The final game of the series was by far the most competitive for Claflin.  The Panthers scored seven runs in the first inning and two in the top of the second to take a 9-0 lead and control of the game.  Spring Hill gained the momentum when it scored five runs in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit to four, 9-5.  The Badgers scored one run in the fourth, one in the seventh and two in the eighth to tie the game at nine-all heading into the final inning.  Neither team scored in ninth, forcing extra innings.  The teams remained knotted at nine after the 10th.  The Panthers stranded one runner in the top of the 11th, leaving the door open for Spring Hill.  The Badgers placed its first batter on base via hit in the bottom of the inning.  A subsequent hit coupled with an error gave the Badgers runners on first and third with no outs.  A single to the shortstop by Spring Hill's third batter scored the winning run in the bottom of the 11th.

For the game, Anthony Ford scored two runs off three hits with three RBI's and Rashid Bivens scored one run off two hits including a homerun, his second of the weekend.  The Panthers also got one run each from Jesse Minter, Johnny Stevenson, Wendell Ferguson, Reginald Rogers, McKinley Leverette and Jabari Brown.

In Game One of Saturday's doubleheader, Claflin got on the scoreboard first, scoring two runs in its half of the inning.  Spring Hill quickly countered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning.  The Badgers scored three runs in the second and two in the fourth to take the 2-7 lead.  The Panthers got one run back in the top of the sixth, but Spring Hill brought two across the plate in the bottom of the sixth and held the Panthers scoreless in the top of the seventh en route to the 3-9 victory.  Bivens scored one run off two hits, including his first homerun of the series, with two RBI's.  Jabari Brown had one hit and scored the Panthers only other run of the game.

Spring Hill struck first in Game Two of the doubleheader.  The Badgers took the 0-2 lead in the bottom of the third.  Claflin cut the deficit to one in the top of the fifth, the Spring Hill remained aggressive, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth and five in the bottom of the sixth to take the 1-11 lead.  The Panthers could not score in the top of the seventh, thus falling by the 10 run margin.  Jesse Minter scored Claflin's lone run in Game Two.  Anthony Ford had two hits with the RBI to score Minter.

The Panthers will host Kentucky Wesleyan in a three-game series this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 21-22, at Historic Mirmow Field in Orangeburg.  The series get underway with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and closes with a 2 p.m. single game on Sunday.  Admission is free and open to the public.
