Claflin Men Defeats Fayetteville State for First Win

Orangeburg, S.C.--The Claflin University Panthers snapped an early season two-game losing streak with an 81-63 win over Fayetteville State University Saturday for Homecoming in a men's basketball game at the Tullis arena.

Claflin is now 1-2 on the season.

Triston Thompson and Trevor Dantzler led a Panthers balanced scoring attack with 14 points each.  Ryan McNeill-Moses and De'shon Nails contributed 12 points apiece, while Benjamin Williams tossed in 10.

McNeill-Moses and Williams pulled down seven and six rebounds, respectively.  Claflin held a 33-27 advantage in rebounding.  Moses also had five assists and three steals on the night.

The Panthers knocked down 10 three-pointers, three short of a season-high 13 against Francis Marion on Nov. 16th. Dantzler connected on a team-high four.

Claflin defense held Fayetteville State, 1-3 on the season, to just 1-of-12 from three-point range.
Fayetteville State, a member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), was led in scoring by Steven Burrough with 15 points. Carl McCray added 10 points in the loss.

The Panthers broke the contest open in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Claflin used a 6-0 run to start the final half followed by an 18-9 outburst. The two offensive outputs provided the Panthers with a 60-36 lead with 9:54 remaining in the game.

De'shon Nails had five points during the stretch.

Claflin racked up 45 points in the half, insuring its sixth straight Homecoming victory. The last homecoming defeat suffered by the Panthers came during the 2011-12 season to fellow Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (CIAA) member Paine 70-61.

In the first half, Fayetteville State held the early advantage before Claflin got on track. The Panthers took a 14-11 lead with 11:57 left in the half on a Tyler Thompson three-pointer.  From that point, Claflin extended its lead to 26-19, outscoring Fayetteville State 12-8 over the next five-minutes.

Fayetteville State pulled within 24-19 at the 7:29 mark, but another 12-8 run by the Panthers provided the Panthers with a 36-27 lead at intermission.

Triston Thompson had 12 points in the half, including a pair of three-pointers. Claflin had five three pointers in the half.

Claflin will host another CIAA member in St. Augustine's University Monday (Nov. 21) at 7:30 p.m.
