Dantzler, Williams Propels Claflin Men’s Basketball Past Saint Augustine’s

Orangeburg, S.C.--Trevor Dantzler and Benjamin Williams led a second-half Panther scoring surge as Claflin University knocked off Saint Augustine's, 85-78, in a non-conference men's basketball game Tuesday in Tullis Arena.
 
The win was Claflin second in a row, pushing them to 2-2 on the season.
 
Dantzler came off the bench to score a team-high 21 points, all coming from behind the three-point line.  He now has a team-high 14 for the season.
 
The contest also mark the second straight game, the Panthers hit double-digits in three-pointers with 10. They had 10 against Fayetteville State (Nov. 19th).
 
Williams tallied 15 second-half points, 13 coming during a 20-9 Claflin run.
 
Also scoring double-figures for the Panthers were Ryan McNeill-Moses with 13 points and De'shon Nails at 10.
 
Triston Thompson had seven assist.
 
Saint Augustine's, 2-3 on the season, was led by Anthony Gaskins with a game-high 24 points. Ken Collins and Kasey Bryant added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
 
Trailing 49-40 with 16:32 left in the ball game, Claflin mounted its comeback as Williams scored nine straight points, pulling the Panthers within two, 51-49, with 14:40 left.
 
Dantzler followed with a pair of three-pointers during a17-2 run, giving Claflin its biggest lead of the game at 76-59 with 5:55 remaining.
 
The Panthers withstood a late Saint Augustine's rally to pull out the win.
 
In the early going of the first half, it was the three-point baskets that enabled Saint Augustine's to build a 21-14 lead at the 12:38 mark. The Falcons had four total three-pointers during the stretch.
 
Things would change over the next four minutes as Dantzler ripped the nets for nine straight points, all three's. Tyler Thompson added a free throw and Claflin held its first lead of the game at 24-23 at the 8:43 mark.
 
From that point, the contest remained close the remainder of the half. There would be four ties with the last being 36-36 with 44 seconds left in the half off a pair of free throws by Tyler Thompson.
 
Saint Augustine's regained the lead 24 seconds later on a layup from Collins, putting the Falcons in front 38-36 at the intermission.
 
Claflin will return to the hardwood Tuesday (Nov. 29th), hosting Central State University in its Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener.
