Claflin Men’s Basketball Falls to Saint Augustine’s in Non-conference Play

Raleigh, N.C—The Claflin University men's basketball team fell to Saint Augustine's University by 10, 72-62, in a non-conference contest Saturday in Emery Gym in Raleigh, N.C.  With the loss the Panthers fall to 4-4 overall on the season.
 
Saint Augustine's improves to 5-5 on the season.
 
Triston Thompson paced Claflin with 13 points.  Thompson also pulled in three rebounds with one assist.
 
Benjamin "Tre" Williams and Trevor Dantzler scored 10 points apiece in the contest. Williams led the Panther on the boards with eight rebounds.
 
Kobie Williams added seven points with three rebounds while Ryan McNeill-Moses and Tyler Major scored six points each in the loss.
 
Saint Augustine's had four players to score in double-figures led by Kenneth Collins with a game-high 19 points.  Quincy January recorded a double-double, 18 points-14 rebounds, while Anthony Gaskins and Craig McDaniel scored 14 and 12 points, respectively for the Falcons.
 
Claflin scored the first four points of the second half to tie the game at 35-all. A three-pointer by Collins with 18:59 remaining broke the tie to give Saint Augustine's a 38-35 advantage.   The Falcons pushed their lead to eight, 38-46, over the next four minutes but Claflin remained poised.
 
The Panthers used an 11-2 run over a six minute period to cut the lead to one, 50-49. Claflin would come within one twice but Saint Augustine's kept pressing.  The Falcons would go up by as many as 18 en route to the 10 point victory.
 
Claflin scored the first two points of the game and pushed its lead to seven, 20-13, with 9:48 remaining in the first.  Saint Augustine's used a 7-0 run over a four-plus minute span to tie the game at 20-all with 5:55 left in the half.
 
The Falcons took a 22-20 lead off two free-throws by January at the 5:26 mark but the lead would be short-lived as a layup by Thompson just 15 seconds later tied the game once.  The teams exchanged the lead over the remainder of the half with Saint Augustine's owning the four-point advantage at intermission (35-31).
 
Claflin will return to action next Monday, December 19, when they host Limestone College in a 1 p.m. matinee.  This will be the final game for the Panthers before the Christmas break.
