Claflin Falls to Coker College in a Non-Conference Baseball Contest

Orangeburg, S.C.--The Claflin University baseball team fell to Coker College, 9-4, in a non-conference baseball contest today at Historic Mirmow Field in Orangeburg. 
 
With the loss, the Panthers fall to 14-18 overall while the Cobras improves to 20-13 on the season.
 
Christopher Gilliam led Claflin offensively with two runs off one hit with one RBI.  Lyndale Morley, this week's Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Pitcher of the Week, knocked out two hits with one RBI.  Rashad Hilton scored the Panthers other run on the evening.
 
Coker was led by Ryan Wayne, who was a triple away from hitting for the cycle.  Wayne finished the game with two runs off three hits and three RBI's.  AJ Strnad scored two runs off one hit with one RBI for the Cobras in the win.
 
Claflin opened the scoring in the game putting up two runs in the bottom of the first inning.  After neither team scored in the second, Coker put up four runs in the top of the third to take the 4-2 lead and never looked back.  The Cobras put up one run in each of the next three innings and two in the seventh while allowing the Panthers just one run in each of the fourth and sixth inning, en route to its five run victory.
 
Jake Moore, who came into the contest in the bottom of the third, was the winning pitcher for Coker.  Torrium Towers, who pitched four innings for the Panthers, was credited with the loss.
 
Claflin will return to Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) play this weekend, Saturday-Sunday, Apr. 2-3, when they travel to Columbia, S.C. to take on intra-state rivals Benedict College.  First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is set 12 noon while Sunday's single game has a first pitch of 1 p.m.  Coker and Claflin will meet again next Wednesday, Apr. 6 in Hartsville, S.C.
