Claflin Drops SIAC Baseball Series to Benedict

Columbia, S.C.—The Claflin University baseball team fell to Benedict College, 2-1, in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference three-game series.  The Panthers and Tigers split the doubleheader of the series on Monday (Apr. 4) with Benedict winning Game One, 9-6 and Claflin winning Game Two, 8-6.  The Tigers defeated the Panthers 7-6 in extra innings on Tuesday (Apr. 5) to secure the series win.

Benedict (21-9, 5-4 SIAC) opened the scoring in the final game of the series putting up four runs in the bottom.  Claflin (15-21, 8-4 SIAC) put up two runs in the top of the second and one in each of the top of the third and six while holding Benedict scoreless over five innings to tie the game at 4-all.  The Panthers put up an additional run in the top of the seven to break the tie and take their first lead of the game.  The Tigers scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to retake the lead.  With two on the base pads and one out, Lyndale Morley singled up the middle to score Jalen Thompson and knot the game at 6-6.  Claflin held Benedict scoreless in its half of the ninth, forcing extra innings.  The Panthers saw the first three batters of the 10th get on base, but could not get any across home-plate, leaving the door open for the Tigers.  With bases loaded and one out, Armando Valentin singled to center field to score Skyler Santiago for the winning run.

Thompson scored two runs while Morley knocked out three hits for the Panthers in the loss. Keamond Eison was the losing pitcher of record in the final game of the series.

Claflin put up two runs in the opening inning of Game One of Monday's doubleheader.  Benedict scored one run in its half of the first to cut the lead to one.  The Panthers increased its lead back to two with one run in the top of the second before the Tigers offense took control.  Benedict put up five runs in the second and one in each of the third, fourth, and fifth while allowing just one additional run by Claflin to take a 8-3 advantage.  The Panthers managed to put up two in the seventh, but could not get any closer, falling by the three run margin.

Jesse Minter scored two runs with two hits and a walk with a stolen base to lead Claflin in Game One.  Jabari Brown, Harold Smith, Rashad Hilton, and Jeturi Brown scored one run apiece. Lyndale Morley was the losing pitcher of record for the Panthers.

There was no scoring over the first two and one-half innings of Game Two.  Benedict looked to be in control as they put up six runs in the bottom of the third for the 6-0 advantage.  After neither team scored in the fourth, Claflin bats came to life.  The Panthers put up two runs in the fifth and six in sixth to take the 8-6 lead.  Neither team scored in the seventh, giving Claflin the two run come-from-behind victory.

Minter continued to have the hot bat as he scored two runs with a three-run homerun to lead the Panthers in Game Two.  Clyde Parker also scored multiple runs in the contest, crossing the plate twice while recording two hits with two RBI's.

Emmanuel Mitchell came in to pitch four innings without allowing a run and just one hit against 14 batters faced.

Claflin University will remain on the road tomorrow when they travel to Hartsville, S.C. to face Croker College.  First pitch for the single game is set for 3 p.m.  The Panthers will return to SIAC play this weekend, Saturday-Sunday, Apr. 4-5, when they host Paine College in a pivotal three-game series.
