Solid Hitting Leads Claflin Past Paine in SIAC Baseball Contest

Orangeburg, S.C. – Lyndale Morley belted a three-run homer and drove in four runs Sunday as Claflin University routed Paine College 16-4 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) series finale baseball game at Mirmow Field.

With the win, the Panthers claimed the series 2-1, improving to 10-5 in the SIAC East Division and 17-23 overall.

Paine fell to 20-18 overall and 9-5 in league play.

After Paine scored three runs in the top of the first, it was Morley who ignited the Panthers offensive unit in the bottom of the first inning. Morley blasted a Quentin Alsbrook pitch over the left field wall for three-run homer, capping off a five-run inning.

After that point, the Panthers racked up 11 runs the rest of the way.

Claflin pounded four Paine pitchers for 18 hits that included at least a hit by eight of the nine starters.  Collectively, the Panthers finished the three-game set with 38 hits and 30 runs.

"That was our game plan going into the series with Paine College, was to wear down their pitching" Claflin Coach James Randall said. "We did that on Saturday which enabled us to go deep into their bullpen on Sunday."

"I was very pleased with our offense, especially the last two games. In those games, we put 26 runs and 28 hits on the scoreboard. That's a lot of hits and runs. I was also pleased with our pitching, holding Paine to just nine run in those games."

Rashad Bivens continued his hot-hitting in the series, collecting three hits and drove in three run. He finished the weekend with eight hits, 10 RBIs and two home runs.

Other top hitters for Claflin included Elliott Melton with a hit and 3 RBIs; Reginald Rogers and Jesse Minter with three hits and 2 RBIs apiece; followed by Jabari Brown and Clyde Parker with two hits each.

Jahziel Morel had a hit and 2 RBIs for Paine.

Jamal Devin, 2-0, pitched six strong innings, allowing six hits and three runs, while just walking two batters. Dillon Parker and Harold Smith saw action in the final three innings.

Alsbrook suffered the loss for Paine.
Claflin will face Benedict College in the Jackie Robinson Classis at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C. at 7 p.m. The Panthers will then travel to Albany State for a SIAC three-game series. Action gets underway Saturday with a doubleheader followed by the series finale on Sunday.
