Bivens Homer Leads Claflin Past Paine

Orangeburg, S.C. – Rashad Bivens highlighted a five-run fourth inning with a grand slam as Claflin University defeated Paine College 10-5 Saturday in the second game of a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) doubleheader at Mirmow Field.  The teams will wrap up their series Sunday at 1 p.m.
 
The home run was Bivens' second of the day and fifth on the season, enabling Claflin to gain the spilt on the day.
 
Claflin is now 16-23 overall and 9-5 in conference play, while Paine dropped to 20-15 and 9-4.
 
After falling to Paine 12-4 in Game One, Claflin trailed 3-2 after 4-1/2 innings of Game Two.  In their bottom half of the fourth, the Panthers sent nine batters to plate that resulted in five runs and a 7-3 lead.  Bivens provided the offensive punch with his blast, while Jesse Minter contributed an RBI single.
 
The Lions pushed across two runs in the top of the sixth, but the Claflin reposed with three in their half of the inning.  Christopher Gilliam, who had three hits in the game, drove home two with a double.
 
For the game, Claflin tagged two Paine pitchers for 10 hits.  Minter and Reginald Rogers had two hits and an RBI each.
 
Paine was led by Kendrick Elder with a pair of hits and 2 RBIs.
 
Keamond Eison was the winning pitcher for Claflin, while Juan Berger took the loss for Paine.
 
In the series opener, Paine erupted for five runs in the opening frame, followed by single runs in the next two inning to build a 7-0 lead.
 
The Panthers got on the score board in the bottom of the third, only to see the Lions rack four more in the fifth for a commanding 11-1 advantages.
 
Bivens led the Panthers 10-hitting attack with a three hits, including a two-run homer. Jalen Thompson and Clyde Parker had two hits apiece.
 
Paine was led by Ricky Caruajalss with a grand slam.
 
Evan Krenz picked up the win in going the distance for Paine.  Lyndale Morley took the loss for the Panthers.
