Claflin Holds Off LeMoyne-Owen 73-63 in SIAC Men’s Basketball Contest

Orangeburg, S.C.--Kobie Williams scored a team-high 16 points as the Claflin University Panthers extended their win streak to six games Monday night, defeating LeMoyne-Owen, 73-63, in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) men's basketball game at the Tullis Arena.
 
With the win, Claflin pushed its season record to 10-4, but more importantly, 5-1 in the conference.
 
Benjamin "Tre" William was the only other player in double-figures for the Panthers with 13 points.
 
Austin Lawton had outstanding performance with nine points, a team-high eight rebounds and four blocked shots.
 
De'shon Nails and Trevor Dantzler added seven points each off the bench.
 
Claflin ended the game with eight three-pointers compared to just one for LeMoyne-Owen.
 
The Panthers defense forced 18 LeMoyne-Owen turnovers that resulted in 19 points.
 
Rashawn Brown led LeMoyne-Owen, 3-13 and 2-3 in the SIAC, with 16 points.  Justin Street and Daron Maston contributed 13 points each for the Magicians in the loss.
 
In the second half, it appeared the Panthers had the contest safely in hand, leading by 19 points, 47-28, with 13:32 left, but the Magicians got hot offensively as Claflin hit a scoring drought.
 
LeMoyne-Owen pulled within 52-50 with 6:40 left by outscoring the Panthers 22-5 over a seven-minute span.
 
Claflin could only manage a Dantzler three-pointer and two free throws from Lawton during the dry spell.
 
The Panthers would regroup over the final six minutes, outscoring the Magicians 21-13 to secure the victory. Lawton contributed six points down the stretch.
 
In the first half, Claflin raced out to a quick 11-5 lead by the 13:22 mark. LeMoyne-Owen wiped out the lead by scoring the next seven points for a 12-11 advantage with 11:28 remaining.
 
That would be the only lead of the game for the Magicians.
 
Following the LeMoyne-Owen run, it was the Panthers turn. Claflin erupted for a 13-2 run highlighted by Triston Thompson's back-to-back three-point plays. The spurt gave the Panthers a 24-14 lead with seven minutes left before the half.
 
Claflin outscored LeMoyne-Owen 10-9 the remainder of the period to lead 34-23 at the intermission.
 
Williams led the Panthers in the opening half with 11 points and four rebounds.
 
Claflin will take to the road for three crucial games, starting with SIAC West Division foe Spring Hill College (Jan. 16) in Mobile, Ala.  The Panthers then visit fellow SIAC East Division members Albany State University (Jan. 21) and Fort Valley State University (Jan. 23).  Claflin returns home to face Paine College on (Jan. 28).
