Claflin Lady Panthers Defeats Florida Tech for Homecoming

Orangeburg, S.C. -- The Lady Panthers of Claflin University withstood a late fourth-quarter rally in defeating Florida Tech, 64-56, for homecoming Saturday at the Tullis Arena on the Claflin campus.
 
The win even Claflin's early season record at 1-1, while Florida Tech remained winless at 0-2.
 
Ashley Fields came off the bench to lead three players in double-figures for the Lady Panthers with 13 points, along with a game-high 11 rebounds, and four assists.
 
Dominique Williams chipped in 12 points for Claflin, while Joy Okeke added 10 points that included a pair of three-pointers.
 
Florida Tech was led in scoring by DeLise Williams with a game-high 19 points followed by Gracie Doane with 16.
 
In the fourth quarter, Claflin held a comfortable 58-49 lead with 3:19 left before Florida Tech went on a 7-3 run, pulling the visitors within five, 61-56, with a minute left.
 
Florida Tech couldn't get any closer as the Lady Panthers hit three free throws down the stretch in sealing their fifth straight homecoming win.
 
In the third quarter, the Lady Panthers used a three-point play along with a three-point basket to maintain their lead.
 
With the contest tied at 31-31 with 8:44 on the clock, Fields completed a pair of three-point plays and Zaakariah Williams followed with another during a 9-2 run. The run propelled the Lady Panthers with to a 40-33 lead at the 7:26 mark.
 
After three straight points by Florida Tech, Okeke drilled a three-pointer and Zaakariah Williams drained another a basket, putting Claflin up 45-36 with 3:31 left in the quarter.
 
Claflin finished the third quarter with a 50-38 lead.
 
Florida Tech scored the game's opening basket, only to see the Lady Panthers scored 11 of the next 13 points for an 11-4 lead at the 4:38 mark.
 
Claflin outscored Florida Tech by a slim 9-8 margin over the remainder of the quarter for the 20-12 lead.
 
In the second quarter, the Lady Panthers held an 11-point advantage twice over the first 5-1/2 minutes. The last being 31-20 with 4:29 left in the period.
 
Florida Tech reduced the lead to single digits at 31-26 to end the quarter as the result of a 6-0 run.
 
Claflin led 31-26 at intermission.
 
Claflin will take to the road for six straight games, starting with Virginia State University on Monday (Nov. 20) in Petersburg, Va.
