Claflin Pulls Even with Benedict in Conference Race

Orangeburg, S.C. (2-15-17)--The Claflin University Panthers pulled even with Benedict College in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Eastern Division race Wednesday, defeating the Tigers, 69-65, in a men's basketball game at the Tullis Arena.
 
The win gave Claflin the regular season sweep of Benedict.  This is the second time in three seasons that the Panthers have swept the Tigers.
 
The win puts Claflin into a first place tie in the division along with Benedict at 11-3.
 
Claflin is now 16-7 for the season.
 
Trevor Dantzler led the Panthers with 14 points, all coming in the final 10 minutes of the game.
 
It was Dantzler that ignited the Panthers offense down the stretch, hitting four three-pointers. His offensive production gave the Panthers a 64-53 lead with 2:38 left.
 
Benjamin Williams also came up big for Claflin, scoring five of his 13 points in the last 31 seconds. He was five-of-six from the free throw line.
 
Ryan McNeill-Moses and Lawton Austin chipped in eight points each for the Panthers.
 
De'shon Nails led Claflin in rebounding with nine, while Lawton pulled down five boards with four blocked shots.
 
Claflin outscored Benedict 48-38 in the second half.
 
Brandon Morris led Benedict, now 14-10 overall, with a game-high 22 points and 11 rebounds. Christopher Spencer 20 points for the Tigers.
 
In the first half, it was little scoring in the early goings. Claflin held a 19-15 advantages with over four minutes left before the half. The Panthers went on a scoring spree the rest of the half, outscoring the Tigers 12-2 for a 31-17 lead at intermission.
 
Claflin will take to road Saturday (Feb. 18) for a contest against Morehouse College.
