Claflin Men’s Basketball Falls to Clark Atlanta in Overtime

Atlanta, Ga. (2-20-17)—  Ryan McNeill-Moses recorded a double-double, 18 points (14 in the second half) and 10 rebounds, as the Claflin University men's basketball team fell to Clark Atlanta, 74-78, in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) overtime men's basketball contest Monday in Epps Gym.
 
The loss, the second in as many games, puts Claflin at 16-9 overall and 11-5 in the SIAC.
 
Trevor Dantzler came off the bench to score 13 points, nine from behind the three-point arc.


 De'shon Nails, who also came off the bench, rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Panthers with 11.
 
McNeill-Moses finished four assists shy of a triple-double with six.
 
Damien Davis scored a game-high 20 points and added seven rebounds to lead Clark Atlanta who improved to 17-11 overall and 11-5 in the SIAC.
 
Clark Atlanta had four players to score in double-figures as Tajai Johnson scored 17, Lawrance Triplett 14 and Anthony Williams 11.
 
Triplett joined Davis with a team-high seven rebounds.
 
Clark Atlanta scored the first five-of-six points to start overtime.
 
Despite falling down by as many as six, the Panthers did have a late surge in the extra period as a McNeill-Moses three-pointer cut the lead to two, 74-72. 
 
Claflin would cut the deficit to two once more, 76-74, with 51 seconds left, but could not get any closer, falling by the four-point margin.
 
Clark Atlanta held a slight advantage on the boards over Claflin at 32-28, but the Panthers owned the advantage in free-throw shooting at 81.3 percent compared to 75.9 percent and field goal percentage at 50 percent compared to 47.2 percent.
 
The Panthers opened the second half of the contest with a 6-3 run to pull within one, 43-42.
 
Clark Atlanta scored the next four points to push its back to five, 47-42, and would go up by as many as seven, 59-52, midway through the second half.
Claflin regrouped, using a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to two, 59-57, with 7:51 remaining in regulation.
 
After Johnson hit two free-throws to push Clark Atlanta's lead to four, 61-57, Claflin offense took control of the game.
 
The Panthers scored the next six points that was culminated by a Nails jumper to give Claflin tis first lead of the game, 64-63, with 2:31 remaining.
 
The lead exchanged hands three more times before ending in a 66-66 tie at the end of regulation.
 
Claflin opened the game a little sluggish, falling behind nine, 22-13, midway through the first half.
 
The Panthers remained poised, chipping away at the lead, point-by-point.
 
Claflin used a 15-7 run over a five minute period to pull with one 29-28, with 5:35 remaining in the half.
 
Clark Atlanta pushed its lead back to six, 34-28, but Claflin kept pressing, pulling within one once again (36-35).
 
Clark Atlanta scored the final four points of the half to enjoy the 40-35 lead at the half.
 
Claflin will close out the regular season this Thursday, Feb. 23, when they host Albany State University in a SIAC East Division matchup.
 
The Panthers will head to Birmingham, Ala., the week of February 27 to participate in the 2017 SIAC Basketball Championships.  The Championships will be contested at the Bill Harris Arena inside the Birmingham Crossplex.
