Lawton and Dantzler Lifts Claflin over Albany State in SIAC Men’s Basketball Contest

Orangeburg, S.C.--Austin Lawton scored a game-high 25 points and Trevor Dantzler came off the bench to add 17 points in leading Claflin University past Albany State University, 83-69, in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) men's basketball game Thursday at the Tullis Arena.
 
With the win, Claflin ended the regular season in a tie for first place in the East Division.
 
Claflin is 17-9 on the season, its best mark under Head Coach Ricky Jackson.
 
Lawton's offensive output was his second highest this season. He previously scored 26 points against Shaw University (Dec. 29). Lawton also finished with a game-high 10 rebounds and two blocked two shots, giving him 62 for the season.
 
Ryan McNeill-Moses and Benjamin "Tre" Williams chipped in 10 points for the Panthers.
 
Triston Thompson tallied seven points and dished out nine assists with no turnovers.
 
Albany State, 10-17 and 5-12, was led in scoring by Devontay Ward with 25 points. JaDon Davis and Lenyear Jackson added 10 points for the Golden Rams.
 
In the first half, Lawton and Dantzler provided the Panthers with the offensive punch it needed. Lawton poured in 12 points, all from down low, while Dantzler ignited the home crowd with four three-points. He had 14 points in the half.
 
It was Dantzler that fired in 11 points during a 15-4 run, giving Claflin its biggest lead of the half at 39-25 with 6:01 left in the half.
 
Claflin led 41-29 at the intermission.
 
In the second half, the Panthers outscored the Golden Rams 42-39.
 
Claflin will return action, participating in SIAC Basketball Championship Tournament that runs from Monday, Feb. 27 through Saturday, March 4 at the Bill Harris Arena inside the Birmingham Crossplex in Birmingham, Ala. Seeding's and pairing s will be announced.
