Claflin Drop SIAC Opening Series to Spring Hill College

Orangeburg, S.C. (March 18-19)--The Claflin University baseball team dropped all three-games of its 2017 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) opening series, falling to Spring Hill College, (15-12, 8-2, 10-5), at Historic Mirmow Field.
 
With the losses, Claflin drops to 6-17 overall and 0-3 in the SIAC, while Spring Hill improves to 13-11 and 3-0 in the conference.
 
The wins by the Badgers also extends its consecutive game-winning streak over the Panthers to six games. During the 2015 season, the Badgers won all three games against the Panthers in Mobile, Ala.
 
In the series finale on Sunday (March 19), Spring Hill used a pair of home runs by Michael Druhan in defeating Claflin.
Druhan accounted for four RBIs and two hits for the Badgers.
 
Ulysses Fluellen had a hit and drove in two runs, while Brandon Harigel added three hits with a RBI for Spring Hill.
 
Johnathan Parnell, II collected three hits and two RBIs to lead Claflin offensively. Other top hitters for the Panthers included Reginald Rogers with a run-scoring single, followed by Elliott Melton and Darrell Langston with a hit and two runs scored each.
 
Justin Whitsett, 4-2, was the winning pitcher for Spring Hill, while Keamond Eison, 1-3, was charged with the loss for Claflin.
 
Spring Hill out-hit Claflin 13-7, but both teams committed three errors.
 
In the series opener on Saturday, the Badgers jumped out to an early 11-3 lead over the first three innings with seven of the runs coming in the third.
 
Spring Hill had three of its four home runs of the game in the inning.  Brennan Fontenot, Conner Harrison and Maverick Latour accounted for the homeruns.
 
The Badgers added four additional runs in the top of the sixth, increasing its lead to 15-3 lead.
 
The Panthers pulled within three runs (15-12) in the bottom half of the sixth, scoring nine runs off five hits with three walks.
 
Hunter Romero came in to pitch for the Badgers in the sixth, shutting the Panthers down in the final 1 1/3 inning.
 
Harrison led Spring Hill in the game with a pair of home runs and three RBIs. Druhan and Latour also drove in three runs for the Badgers.
 
Claflin, who collected 10 hits in the game, was led offensively by Parnell with two hits, including a solo home run, and three RBIs. Melton had a hit and two RBIs for the Panthers, while Michael Kendrick and Rashad Webster added two hits and an RBI each.
 
Rogers had three singles for Claflin.
 
Dylan Kiene, 2-1, was the winning pitcher for Spring Hill, while Eric Dubose, 1-4, suffered the loss for Claflin.
 
In the second game on Saturday, the Badgers broke open a close contest with four runs in the fifth en route to the win.
 
Spring Hill opened with a 3-0 lead by the bottom of the second but Claflin offense produced two runs in the bottom of the fourth to close the gap.  Melton and Kendrick each produced run-scoring singles for the Panthers.
 
Those would be the only runs scored by Claflin.
 
The Badgers put up four runs in the fifth and one in the sixth en route to its six run victory.
 
Langston had two of Claflin's eight hits in the game.
 
Sean Bretz, 2-1, picked up the win for Spring Hill while Torriun Towers, 1-3, took the loss for Claflin.
