Claflin Wins SIAC Baseball Series with Benedict 2-1

Panthers Honor Seniors in Pre-game Ceremony

Orangeburg, S.C. – Lyndale Morley, Harold Smith and Elliott Melton accounted for six runs in leading Claflin University past Benedict College 10-7 in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) baseball game Sunday at Historic Mirmow Field.
 
With the win, Claflin claimed the three-game series 2-1, improving its divisional record to 8-10 and its overall record to 14-29.
 
Benedict dropped to 22-13 and 11-7 on the season.
 
In the series finale, the Panthers reached the scoreboard first off a bases loaded balk by Tiger starting pitcher Jacob Lagos in the opening inning.
 
Claflin held the one run lead until Benedict picked up three runs in the top of the third for the 3-1 advantage.
 
The Panthers responded with nine runs over the next three innings for a commanding 10-4 lead after five innings of play.
 
Claflin would go scoreless the rest of the way while Benedict scored three times in the eighth inning, closing the gap to 10-7.
 
Travis Martinez, who relieved Panther starter Eric Dubose in the eighth inning with two outs, retired the next four Benedict batters to pick up the save.
 
Dubose, 3-6, was the winning pitcher for Claflin. He allowed nine hits and struck out seven over 7-1/3 innings of work.
 
Lagos, 1-3, took the loss for Benedict.
 
Morley, Smith and Melton drove in two runs each to lead the Panthers offensively.
 
Jonathan Parnell, II had three hits and scored three times, while Darrell Langston chipped in with two hits, three runs scored and an RBI for Claflin.
 
Rashad Bivens had a run-scoring single and scored twice for the Panthers.
 
Benedict was led by Armando Valentin and David White Jr. with two hits and 3 RBIs each.
 
Claflin travels to Augusta University for a midweek non-conference game on Wednesday (April 26). The Panthers will close out the regular season at Lane College (April 29-30) in a crucial SIAC three-game series.
