Claflin Suffer Late-Scoring Drought, Fall to Albany State

Orangeburg, S.C.-- Albany State University scored the game's last seven points in defeating Claflin University 55-49 in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division women's basketball game Monday at the Tullis Arena.
 
The loss, Claflin first at home this season in eight games, dropped the Lady Panthers to 13-9 on the season and 9-4 in the SIAC.
 
Deja Dickens led the Lady Panthers in scoring with 12 points and shared team-high in steals with Ashley Fields at four. Fields also dished out a game-high seven assists.
 
Dominique Williams just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds for Claflin.
 
Joy Okeke and Jhanice Stokes chipped in with nine and eight points, respectively, for the Lady Panthers.
 
Stokes also blocked five shots, running her season total to 52.
 
Albany State, 12-11 overall and 8-5 in the SIAC, was led by Kayla Green with 13 points and Elesha Foster, who recorded a double-double, 10 points-13 rebounds.
 
The game was decided in the final 2:58 of the contest. Claflin was leading at that point, 49-48, as Dickens hit one-of-two free throws. That would be the last score for the Lady Panthers as Albany State finished the game on a 7-0 run.
 
During the scoreless drought, the Lady Panthers committed three turnovers, three fouls and missed three shots.
 
In the third quarter, Claflin rallied from a 25-19 halftime deficit to pull even with Albany State at 30-30 on Dickens' three-pointer at the 2:29 mark. Dickens and Okeke scored the next two baskets, giving the Lady Panthers their first lead of the game at 34-30 with 1:11 left in the quarter.  Claflin outscored Albany State 15-5 over that span.
 
The Lady Panthers finished the quarter with a four-point advantage at 38-34.
 
Albany State started the game with a quick 9-0 lead over the first three minutes of play.
 
A basket by Okeke halted the scoreless streak for Claflin as the Lady Panthers trailed 9-2 with 4:03 left in the quarter.
 
Claflin would score two additional baskets in the quarter, while Albany State chalked up seven points to lead 16-6 lead heading into the second quarter.
 
The second quarter saw Albany State increase its lead to 11-point on three separate occasions over a five-minute span, the last being 24-13 at the 3:50 mark.
The Lady Panthers rallied in the final three minutes of the quarter with a 6-1 run, cutting Albany State lead to 25-19 at the half.
 
The Lady Panthers will return to action on Wednesday (Jan. 31) at home against Virginia Union University in their final non-conference matchup of the season.  Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
