Claflin Falls to University of Tampa in Women’s Basketball

Tampa. Fla. - Ashley Fields went 13-of-17 from the field en route to scoring a game-high 29 points as the Claflin University Lady Panthers falling to the host University of Tampa, 83-65, in the final game of the University of Tampa Tournament, Saturday (Nov. 10) at the Bob Martinez Athletic Center.
 
Claflin falls to 0-2 on the season and will make its home debut on Wednesday (Nov. 14) against Paine College of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). The Lady Panthers follows that contest with two more home games, Anderson University (Nov. 17) for homecoming and Saint Augustine's University in their Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) opener on November 19.
 
Claflin had three players to score in double-figures as Dejà Dickens scored 11 points and Dashia Jackson finished with 10.
 
Jackson was the team leader in rebounds with six, while Fields and Dickens pulled in five boards apiece.
 
Melijah Sullivan connected on 9-of-10 field goals for a team-high 21 points to lead Tampa.  Emily Eshoo contributed 18 points while Staja Tyler contributed 16 and Dori Nagy dropped in 10 points to round out the double-digit scorers for the Spartans.  Tyler and Nagy pulled in a game-high nine rebounds each for Tampa.
 
The Spartans opened the game with an 8-0 run. Tampa later doubled their lead to 16, scoring 10 of the next 12 points, for an 18-2 advantage with 3:58 left in the opening quarter.
 
The Lady Panthers did manage to outscore the Spartans 8-5 the rest of the quarter to trail 23-10.
 
Claflin used an 8-3 run over the first three minutes of the second quarter to cut the Tampa's lead to single digit, 26-18.  Tampa pushed the margin back to 10 at 28-18 off a layup by Eshoo on the next possession.
 
The Spartans maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the quarter to lead 42-25 at the half.
 
Tampa increased its 17-point halftime lead to 23, 51-28, over the first four minutes of the third stanza, but the Lady Panthers did not stop pressing.
 
The final six minutes of the quarter saw Claflin outscore the Spartans 14-12 to trail 63-42 heading into the final quarter.
 
The Lady Panthers scored the first two points to start the fourth quarter off a Fields jumper.  Claflin kept chipping away over the first three-plus minutes, cutting the lead to 16, 66-50, with 7:08 left.  That would be the closest Claflin would get in the quarter. 
 
Tampa increased its lead to 24, 76-52, at the 3:08 mark.  Claflin outscored the Spartans 13-7 down the stretch.
