Fields leads Claflin Lady Panthers Past Paine College

Orangeburg, S.C. –  Ashley Fields scored 21 points, 19 coming in the first half, as the Claflin University Lady Panthers picked up their first win of the season, defeating Paine College 64-45 in Tullis Arena on Wednesday (Nov. 14).
 
Claflin is now 1-2 on the season, while Paine remains winless at 0-2.
 
The offensive performance by Fields marked her second straight game with 20-plus points. She had a career-high 29 points against the University of Tampa last week.
 
Fields was 7-of-14 from the field and near-perfect from the free throw line at 7-of-8. She also finished the game with a double-double with 13 rebounds.
 
Dionna Long also scored in double-figures for Claflin, dropping in 13. Deja Dickens came off the bench to score seven points for the Lady Panthers and Onyeka Monyei pulled down nine rebounds.
 
Paine was led by Akirah Robinson and Keondra Archie with 10 points and 10 rebounds, respectively.
 
In the first quarter, it was Fields that put the Lady Panthers in front for good with a three-point play. The scoring play gave Claflin a 7-4 lead at the 6:24 mark.
 
Fields coveted another three-point play on the Lady Panthers next possession, giving Claflin a 10-7 lead with six minutes left in the quarter.
 
Claflin ended the quarter with a 12-4 run to lead 22-10 heading into the second period.
 
In the second quarter, the Lady Panthers saw their double-digit lead cut to six, 26-20, in the first five minutes. The Claflin offense responded by scoring the next 10 points, building a 36-20 lead with 2:03 left in the quarter.
 
The Lady Panthers led 38-22 at intermission.
 
In the third quarter, the two teams combined for 15 points with Claflin scoring 10 points for a 48-27 advantage.
 
Paine outscored the Lady Panthers by a slim 18-16 margin in the fourth quarter.
 
Claflin will return to the hardwood on Saturday (Nov. 17), taking on Anderson University for homecoming.  Tip-off is set for 1:30 p.m. in Tullis Arena.
