Claflin Faces Undefeated Chowan in CIAA Matchup

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Claflin University Panthers will visit Chowan University for a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) men's basketball game on Saturday (Dec. 1).
 
Tip-off is schedule for 4 p.m. at the Helms Center.
 
Claflin is 2-5 overall and 1-1 in the CIAA on the season.  The Panthers fell to Tuskegee University 55-51 on Thursday (Nov. 29). 
 
For the season, Claflin is averaging 73.9 points with Dannay Brown topping all scorers at 14.9 points along with 15 three-pointers. Brown has hit double-figures in five of the Panthers seven games this season, scoring a career-high 28 points against Limestone.
 
Another offensive weapon for Claflin, especially from the free throw line, is Triston Thompson at 14.6 points. Thompson is shooting 88.9% (40-of-45) from the charity stripe this season, including a sizzling 91.9% (34-of-37) over the last four-of-five games.  Thompson did not attempt a free-throw in the Shaw contest.
 
Chowan is 5-0 overall and 4-0 at home this season.  The Hawks are off to their best start since joining the NCAA Division II ranks after defeating Elizabeth City State University 79-62 in their last outing.  This is the league opener for Chowan.
 
Chowan is averaging 85.8 points with six players in double-figures. Demetrius Sanders leads the group at 16.0 points followed by Timothy Bing with 14.8 points.
 
In the shooting department, Claflin is hitting 38.1 percent (52-of-137) behind the three-point line, while Chowan holds a 36.6% (37-of-100). Overall, the Panthers are shooting 43.1% from the field compared to 51.8% for the Hawks.
 
After the Chowan contest, Claflin will close out the four-game road trip on (Dec. 3) at Elizabeth City State University.
