Claflin Falls to Francis Marion in Non-conference Home Game

Orangeburg, S.C. – The Claflin University Lady Panthers suffered their second straight setback, losing to Francis Marion University, 67-49, in a non-conference basketball on Friday (Dec. 14) at the Tullis Arena.
 
Claflin falls to 6-6 with the loss.
 
Ashley Fields was the only player in double-figures for the Lady Panthers with 11 points to go along with eight rebounds. Dashia Jackson and Dionne Long added seven points each for Claflin.
 
Francis Marion, 3-2 on the season, was led by Shaunice Fulmore with a game-high 25 points and Kiana Adderton who added 17.
 
In the first quarter, Claflin led once and trailed by three points at 17-14 at the end of the quarter. The Lady Panthers used success at the free throw, hitting 5-of-6 in the quarter, to stay within striking distance of the Patriots.
 
The second quarter was the turning point of the game for Claflin. The Lady Panthers generated just seven points, three field goals and a free throw, while Francis Marion chalked up 22 points in the period.
 
The Patriots used a 16-0 run midway thru the quarter, to push a 21-17 lead to 37-17. Francis Marion went into the half leading 39-21.
 
The third quarter saw Claflin outscore Francis Marion by a slim one-point margin, 14-13, to head into the final quarter down 52-35.
 
The closest Claflin could get in the quarter was 17, 43-26, on a three-pointer from Long with 6:40 left. Francis Marion scored nine of the last 14 points of the quarter.
 
The Patriots won the fourth quarter by a 15-14 advantage in route to the 18-point win.
 
Claflin will return to action next week with a pair of Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association games on the road against Bowie State University (Dec. 17) and Lincoln University (PA) (Dec. 19).
