Bowie State Hold Off Claflin in CIAA Contest

Bowie, MD –  Bowie State University scored six of the game last seven points in holding off the Claflin University Lady Panthers, 60-50, in a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) contest on Monday (Dec. 17).
 
The Loss, Claflin third straight, dropped the Lady Panthers below the .500 mark for the season at 6-7 and 4-3 in the CIAA.
 
Ashley Fields led three Claflin players in double-figures with 18 points (8-of-10 from the free-throw line).  She also pulled in eight rebounds, with three blocks and three assists. Dashia Jackson and Shakarri Mack added 10 points each for the Lady Panthers.
 
Claflin had four three-pointers in the game with Jackson and Deja Dickens accounting for two apiece.
 
Bowie State, now 9-1 and 2-0, was led by Kyaja Williams who finished with a double-double, 25 points-11 rebounds. 
 
Pere Alexander scored seven points with a game-high 12 rebounds while Amel Duggins contributed 10 points for the Bulldogs.
 
In the free-throw department, Claflin was 8-of-10, while Bowie State, which had more attempts, was 20-of-25.
 
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Panthers reduced a 10-point Bowie State lead to seven, 48-41, when Dickens drilled a three-pointer with 6:18 left.
 
Over the next 4-1/2 minutes, Claflin pulled within five points twice, the last at 54-49 with 1:36 remaining.
 
Bowie State held off the Lady Panthers late rally by ending the game on a 6-1 run.
 
The third quarter saw Claflin and Bowie State play on even terms as each team scored 14 points.
 
The closest Claflin would get in the quarter was six, 32-26, on a basket by Fields at 7:54 mark.
 
Williams scored on a layup with 4:06 showing on the clock to push the Bowie State lead to 11, 39-28.
 
The Lady Panthers managed to cut the lead to a single digit by outscoring the Bulldogs 8-5 to trail 44-36 after three complete.
 
In the first half, Bowie State capped off the first quarter with a 9-3 run and started the second by scoring nine of the first 11 points. The 18-5 offensive output wiped out an 11-10 Lady Panthers first quarter lead and put Bowie State ahead 28-16 midway the second quarter.
 
The Bulldogs held at least a 10-point lead in the quarter until Carmen Robinson hit a jumper with 30 seconds remaining, pulling Claflin within 30-22 at the intermission.
 
The Lady Panthers will conclude the first-half of their 2018-19 season at Lincoln University (PA) on Wednesday (Dec. 19).
