Claflin Travels to Bowie State for CIAA Contest

Orangeburg, S.C. - The Claflin University men's basketball team will travel to Bowie, MD to take on Bowie State University for a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) matchup on Monday, Dec. 17.
 
Action gets underway at 7:30 p.m. inside the A.C. Jordan Arena on the Bowie State campus.
 
Claflin will enter the contest in search of its third straight win after posting back-to-back victories for the second time this season. In the last two outings, the Panthers defeated Virginia Union University (72-70) and Saint Augustine's University (60-55).
 
Claflin will bring a 4-7 overall record into the clash, but more importantly an even 3-3 mark in the CIAA. In those three league wins, the Panthers averaged 71.7 points per game, shot 44.9% (70-for-156) from the field with 23 three-pointers, 12 coming in the win over Virginia Union.
 
Point guard Triston Thompson has enjoyed the best result of any Claflin player during the three wins, averaging 21.6 points with a career-best of 30 points against Saint Augustine's.
 
For the season, Thompson is the team's top free throw shooter at 86.6% (58-of-67) and falls just under team leader, Danny Brown, in scoring with 13.4 points.
 
Brown is averaging 13.9 points and a team-high 22 three-pointers.
 
Another double-figure scorer for the Panthers is Jaimik Moore at 11.7 points. Moore has hit double-digits in scoring five-of-his-seven games this season.
 
The return of Austin Lawton has been a plus for Claflin. Lawton is averaging 8.8 points over his five games and scored a season best 21 points against Elizabeth City State University. The offensive performance was five points short of a career best of 26 points for Lawton that came against Shaw University during the 2016-17 season.
 
Bowie State, which defeated Winston-Salem State University in double-overtime, 110-105, on Sunday (Dec. 16) in its CIAA opener, is 5-6 overall. The Bulldogs are winners of their last five-of-six games.
 
Bowie State is led by David Belle with 13.7 points followed by Juwun Smith at 11.0 points.
 
The Bulldogs is averaging 71.9 points for the season and giving up 74.8 on the defensive side.
 
Claflin is averaging 72.4 points offensively and yielding 72.7 on defense.
 
Following the Bowie State contest, Claflin will finished the 2018 calendar year at Lincoln University (PA) on (Dec. 19) in another CIAA contest.
