Claflin Falls to Chowan in CIAA Road Contest

MURFREESBORO, N.C. – Chowan University outscored Claflin University 14-6 late in the fourth quarter en route to an 85-76 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) win over the Lady Panthers on Saturday (Dec. 1) at the Helms Center.
 
The loss, Claflin second straight, evened the Lady Panthers season record to 4-4. The defeat also marked the first CIAA loss for the Lady Panthers in three outings.
 
Dashia Jackson led Claflin in a losing effort with 23 points, five assists and six rebounds. She was 8-for-15 from the field and 6-of-8 at the free throw line.
 
Deja Dickens was the only other Lady Panthers to score in double figures with 17 points that included four three-pointers, giving her a team-leading 20.
 
Ashley Fields, who missed reaching double-figures for just the second time this season, contributed nine points for Claflin. Dionna Long and Carmen Robinson added eight points apiece for the Lady Panthers.
 
Chowan, now 4-4 and 1-0 CIAA, was led by Mariah Coker with 23 points. Coker was 5-for-6 from behind the three-point line and added eight assists. Jada Lee had 14 points for Chowan followed by Jahkeria Bagby and Kaylah Henderson with 11 points each.
 
After trailing 40-34 at the half, Claflin fought back to grab the lead after three complete. The Lady Panthers gained the lead with 15 seconds left in the third quarter on a three-point basket from Dickens. The basket provided Claflin with a 61-59.
 
The Lady Panthers outscored Chowan 27-19 in the third quarter with 22 points coming from the bench. For the game, the Claflin reserves contributed 41 of the Lady Panthers 76-points total.  Claflin also generated 15 points off Chowan turnovers in the quarter. 
 
In the fourth quarter, the game was tied twice with the last being 67-67 with five minutes left. Chowan scored four of the next seven points to lead 71-70 with 3:26 remaining.
 
From that point, the Hawks finished the game with a 14-6 run in pulling out the win.
 
In the first quarter, Chowan outscored Claflin 20-10.
 
The Hawks produced its biggest lead of the game in the second quarter, 17-points (37-20), at the 3:13 mark. The Lady Panthers rallied to outscore Chowan 14-3 the remainder of the quarter to trail 40-34 at intermission.
 
Claflin will wrap up its four-game road trip on Monday (Dec. 3) at Elizabeth City State University.
