Claflin Falls to Bluefield State, 9-3

Orangeburg, S.C. -- Bluefield State College defeated Claflin University 9-3 in the first game of their three-game baseball series Friday at Mirmow Field.
 
The second game of the series is slated for Saturday at 1 p.m. followed by the finale on Sunday also at 1 p.m.
 
The loss dropped Claflin to 1-11 on the season while Bluefield State is now 2-4.
 
The contest was scoreless after three innings. Bluefield State scored the game's first run in the fourth and two more in the seventh followed by a four-run eighth for an 8-0 lead. The visitors made it 9-0 in the ninth with a run.
 
The Panthers avoided the shutout by scoring three runs in the ninth. Johnathan Parnell, II delivered his first homer of the season, a two-run shot that brought in Clyde Parker, who opened the inning with a walk.
 
After Darrell Langston struck out for Claflin's second out of the inning, Grayland Fowler singled and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Michael Kendrick then walked, putting runners on first and second for the Panthers. Fowler scored on the next play when Bluefield State centerfielder Austin Stambaugh dropped a fly ball by Craig Hopkins. Hopkins was thrown out of the play at second base, ending the game.
 
Dillion Parker, 0-3, suffered the loss for Claflin. He allowed three runs on nine hits in 6.2 innings of work.
 
Tanner Muovich picked up the win for Bluefield State.
 
Claflin was led at the plate by Parnell II with a pair of hits that including the home run.
 
Other top hitters for the Panthers included Parker and Hopkins with two hits each.
 
Tanner Ray had three hits and drove in four runs to lead Bluefield State.
