Claflin and Paine Split SIAC Doubleheader

Orangeburg, S.C. -- The Claflin University Panthers gained a split with Paine College in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) East Division doubleheader on Saturday (Mar. 31), defeating the Lions 9-2 in the second game.
 
Paine won the opener 5-4 in nine innings. Both games were played at Mirmow Field.
 
With the victory, Claflin remained a 1/2-game behind Paine in the divisional standings at 5-2, while the Lions are 6-2.
 
In the second game, the Panthers jumped on Paine starter who was also the loser in the contest, Jose Torres (2-5), for five runs in the first two innings.  Claflin followed that with a four-run second inning. The Panthers then tacked on a run in the fourth for the 6-2 lead. Claflin bats remained hot as they erupted for three more runs in the sixth.
 
The Panthers, now 9-21 overall, pounded out eight hits with Jalen Sprull and Ashtin Knowles accounting for two each.  Grayland Fowler had four RBIs that included a three-run double and a sacrifice fry.
 
Other top hitters for Claflin were Darrell Langston with a run-scoring triple and Johnathan Parnell II who added a hit and an RBI.
 
Paine, 11-12 overall, was led in game two by Gabriel Guzman with two-run homer.
 
Cleveland Westbrook improved to 5-1 on the season in going the distance. He held the Lions batters in check with just three hits along with 12 strikeouts.
 
In the first game, Paine scored two runs in the ninth and withstood a Panther rally in the bottom half of the inning in winning 5-4.
 
Claflin led 3-0 after five innings of play, but Paine rallied to score three runs in the top of the sixth, sending the contest into extra innings.
 
The Panthers out-hit the Lions 14-11 in the game.
 
Parnell II was near-perfect at the plate for Claflin, going 3-4 with an RBI. Sprull collected two hits and an RBI, while Clyde Parker had a hit and an RBI.
 
Eric McElveen, Langston and Fowler contributed two hits each.
 
Guzman was the top hitter for Paine with three hits and an RBI.
 
In the early going of the game, it was a pitching duel between Claflin's Dillon Parker and Evan Krenz of Paine.
Parker pitched five shutout innings before giving up three runs in the sixth.  Krenz pitched four scoreless innings to start the game and gave up the Panthers three runs in the fifth. He finished the game, going eight innings before giving away to Chris McKenzie in the ninth.
 
Krenz, 5-5, recorded the win, while McKenzie picked up the save.
 
Eric DuBose, 1-5, took the loss for Claflin.
 
The finale of the series is scheduled for Monday (April 2) at 3 p.m. at Mirmow Field.
