Augusta Defeat Claflin in Final Home Baseball Game of the Season

Orangeburg, S.C. -- The Claflin University baseball team blew an early 4-0 lead and the Augusta University Jaguars scored 14 unanswered runs in defeating the Panthers 14-4 on Wednesday (Apr. 25) in the final home game of the season at Mirmow Field.

Claflin is now 15-27 overall heading into this weekend's Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) series at Spring Hill College. The three-game series gets underway Friday (Apr. 27) with a single game at 6 p.m. followed by a double-header on Saturday (Apr. 28), starting at 12-noon.
All games will be played at the Historic Stan Galle Field.  All games are Central Standard Time.

The Panthers are currently hold down second place in the SIAC East Division at 11-4 behind Albany State University, which is 13-4.

Spring Hill, a member of the West Division, is 15-1 in the league and 24-17 overall.

In losing to the Jaguars for the second time this season, the Panthers opened their half of the first inning with four runs on five straight hits. Darrell Langston started the action for Claflin with a one-out single followed by back-to-back singles from Grayland Fowler and Jalen Sprull to load the bases. Clyde Parker, who had two hits in the game, delivered a two-run single that brought home Langston and Fowler, giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead.

Harold Smith produced Claflin next two runs with a double that drove in Sprull and Parker as the Panthers built a 4-0 lead.

That would be all the scoring for the Panthers as Augusta starter Zach Goble, now 3-1 on the season, combined with two other Jaguar pitchers to hold the Claflin batters to only two hits in the final eight innings.

Augusta erased the Panthers early lead by scoring two runs in the second and three more in the fourth for a 5-4 advantage.

Augusta would increase its lead to 12-4 with a four-run sixth-inning followed by three additional runs in the seventh-inning.

The Jaguars, now 14-31, added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings for the final score.

Timothy Gray and Ty Hobbs led Augusta with a home run each.

Torriun Towers, 2-3, was the losing pitcher for Claflin.
