Claflin Fall in SIAC Series Opener to Spring Hill

Mobile, Ala. -- Spring Hill College erupted for a seven-run fifth inning as the Badgers defeated the Claflin University Panthers, 14-8, in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) baseball game on Friday (Apr. 27) at Stan Galle Field.
 
The three-game series will conclude on Saturday (Apr. 28) with a doubleheader starting at 12-noon (CST).
 
The loss drops Claflin to 15-28 overall and 11-5 in the SIAC, while Spring Hill improved to 25-17 and 16-1 in the conference.
 
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when a Grayland Fowler grounder to short brought home Johnathan Parnell II, who doubled to start the game.
 
The Badgers tied the game in their half of the inning and took the lead at 2-1 with a run in the second.
 
Claflin would regain the lead in the third with a pair of runs -- a run-scoring single by Fowler and Jalen Sprull's sacrifice fly that scored a run.
 
In the fifth, Claflin increased the margin to 5-3 when Parnell II doubled to score Silvaris "Andre" Hooks, Jr. and Eric McElveen.
 
Spring Hill wiped out the Panthers lead with a three-run fourth inning followed by seven runs in the next inning for a 13-5 lead after five innings of play.  The Badgers tacked on one additional run in the seventh for their 14 runs.
 
The Panthers added three runs over the last two innings for the final score.
 
Parnell II, led Claflin with a 3-for-5 performance that included a pair of doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs.
 
Fowler was 1-for-2 with two RBIs for the Panthers, while Darrell Langston and Craig Hopkins had two hits each.
 
Claflin finished the game with 11 hits and committed three errors while stranding seven base runners.
 
Dillon Parker, 5-4, suffered the loss on the mound for the Panthers.
 
Zack Paulene, 6-2, picked up the win for Spring Hill.
 
The Badgers were led at the plate by Brennan Fontenot and Neil Ring with 3 RBIs each.  Fontenot also had two hits and a fielder's choice.
