Spring Hill Sweep Claflin in SIAC Series

Mobile, Ala. - The Spring Hill College Badgers completed a three-game Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIACI) sweep of Claflin University on Saturday (Apr. 28), taking both games of a doubleheader at Stan Galle Field.

The regular-season ending series dropped Claflin to 15-30, heading into the SIAC Tournament scheduled for May 3-5 in Albany, Ga. The Panthers finished the season runner-up to Albany State University in the East Division at 11-7.

The Badgers wrapped up their final season of transition to the NCAA Division II at 27-17 overall and 18-1 in the SIAC Division.

In the doubleheader opener, Spring Hill starter Anthony Fell pitched a three-hit shutout in the Badgers 4-0 win. He struck out three Panthers batters and did not issue a walk in going the distance.

Fell, 3-1, gave up three singles in the game to Ashtin Knowles in the Claflin second, Jalen Sprull in the fourth and a seventh-inning hit by Grayland Fowler.

Cleveland Westbrook, who suffered just his second defeat in nine decisions, held the Badgers in check after giving up four runs and five hits in the first three innings. After the rocky start, Westbrook surrendered only two hits and no runs the rest of the way.

Grayson Williams and Thomas Smith were the top hitters for Spring Hill with a home run each.

In the second game, Spring Hill broke a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning with a pair of runs for the 6-4 win.

The Panthers took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third as Sprull delivered a two-out double that drove in Darrell Langston and Johnathan Parnell II.

After the Badgers went ahead 3-2 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth-inning, Claflin regained lead at 4-3 in the top of the fifth-inning with an unearned by Parnell run followed by an RBI single from Eric McElveen that scored Langston.

Spring Hill tied the contest at 4-4 in its half of the fifth with a run before scoring twice in the sixth.

Claflin was led by Sprull with two hits and two RBIs.

Parnell II and Langston had two hits for the Panthers, which ended the game with eight hits.
